Varkiza (Greek: Βάρκιζα) is a beautiful suburb of Athens, with a long sandy beach, on the way to Sounion. It is a part of the municipality of Vari in southern Attica and lies approximately 25 km south of Athens, 2 km south of Vari and 20 km south west of the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. Most of the streets are named after Greek myths as well as a main street Poseidonos. Varkiza has a famous beach area that includes; tennis court, beach volley, water sports, park, restaurants, taverns, ouzeri, seafood restaurant cafeteria, play area for children and more. The water is shallow, crystal clear and the seabed is naturally sandy. One of the most popular forms of entertainment during the hot summer months in and around Athens is the outdoor cinemas and Vakiza has two of them. The movies are not dubbed, the Greek translation appears as subtitles.
Vari (Greek: Βάρη) is a suburban municipality 25 km south of Athens center. Distance to Voula and Varkiza is 2 km Vouliagmeni 4km and Agia Marina 6 km, all with beautiful beaches. Vari is locally known for its many grill taverns and their specialty, grilled lamb. Year 2004, just in time for the Olympic Games, unofficially “highway” GR-85, 2 lanes in each direction, was declared opened. This “highway” is a part of the south west connection between Athens and the new airport, Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, which opened earlier in 2001. The road is also linking Voula, Vari and Koropi and has access roads to Attiki Odos which gives fast access to all Athens area, Piraeus harbor and National road.
